Study Background

In cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the New Mexico Department of Transportation completed a corridor study of I-40 extending from the New Mexico/Arizona border to Albuquerque, New Mexico (2024).

As a result of this study, the Prewitt and I-40 interchange (Exit 63) has been identified as an area in need of safety and traffic flow improvement.

To begin evaluating transportation needs in this area, the Northwest New Mexico Council of Governments (NWNMCOG) has initiated the I-40 Prewitt Interchange Reconstruction Project.

Purpose and Need

Every day, we see the signs that change is needed:

These challenges show us exactly why this project matters for Prewitt's future.

Study Area

Our focus is on Exit 63 where I-40 meets Route 66/NM 122. This interchange is more than just roads and ramps - it's a crucial connection for local businesses, residents, and travelers passing through our region.

Currently, the project area spans over 600 acres and encompasses County Road 19, which leads to the Prewitt Industrial Park.
